REDWOOD
February 5 - March 13, 2022
Written by Brittany K. Allen
Directed by H. Adam Harris
AN HONEST DEPICTION OF LOVE AND FAMILY, AS WELL AS HOW GENERATIONAL AND RACIAL TRAUMA SHAPES WHO WE ARE.
Meg and Drew, an interracial couple, are thrown into crisis when Meg’s uncle discovers Drew belongs to the family that owned Meg’s relatives in an antebellum Kentucky. What are the ways love can and cannot transcend both modern social barriers and historical power structures? Meg and Drew must learn if it is possible to forgive, champion, or fully understand a person who is beloved but fundamentally other.

FROM THE PRESS
“‘Redwood’ was worth the wait…Director H. Adam Harris' smart and efficient staging unfolds on a candle-bedecked set as a frothy, over-the-top comedy in the first act and a touching drama in the second. Harris maximizes the humor before taking square aim at the heart.”

“H. Adam’s smart and active direction keeps viewers engaged from scene to scene with bits of choreography and song that deepen the themes in the play. Redwood is witty, while also examining how a blood-guilty history might complicate present-day relationships. The play is both sit-comical and deeply theatrical. Which ultimately serves up an evening of comfort-theater with a side of reality.”

“Playwright Brittany K. Allen gives us a view of what community is, with all its painful and complex history, and the imperfect humans who live out their stories… Everything about this production pulls you in and captivates your attention and emotions for the full two plus hours. Director H. Adam Harris brings all of this together in a powerful production, one that I wish everyone could see and start discussing.”

“…blends comedy and tragedy; history and contemporary zeitgeist. It’s deeply personal, it’s universal and it gives anyone interested in doing so tools to name and engage in some ugly truths about American history...and it’s also entertaining.”

“But through humor and a loving family, the exploration of the complicated connections that bind us, historically and presently, is ultimately hopeful. It shows us that globally, nationally, and personally, we need to acknowledge past traumas, but not let them define us as we move forward together.”

“It’s the perfect kind of play it entertains you but also gives you a lot to think about. It’s a way to explore and discuss difficult themes but in a way that feels real and useful and productive. And it’s pretty funny.”

“Now, Jungle is full-tilt back, true to form, with an engrossing play that gives audiences a lot to think about long after its final image surrenders to darkness.”

TICKETS
This season the Jungle is excited to implement PAY AS YOU ARE pricing this season, developed by our friends at Theater Mu.
PAY AS YOU ARE pricing asks those who routinely pay $45 for theater tickets to pay that amount; it is the actual fair market value of the ticket. If an audience member needs to pay less, they can choose to pay less. Those who can pay more than the market price are welcome to do so, and their generosity will help cover the cost of someone else’s ticket as well.
