Greenhouse play reading Series

Now in its third season, the reading series has a new name!

In the past two seasons, we’ve watched the series cultivate so much—plays, playwrights, actors, directors, and audience members.

The series feels like the Jungle’s greenhouse—a warm, verdant space where art and people can thrive. Readings take place in the theater and are always available for free (with a new option to support the series and purchase a season package) and open to all. Please join us!

By Josh Wilder
Directed by Ansa Akyea

Jalil and Kwamaine want their family to be “Cosby Show happy,” but that life isn’t in the cards—until a giant dandelion sprouts and wishes start falling from the sky.

Seizing the possibility of no longer feeling like the city's leftovers, the brothers begin to dream their way out of the cycle of poverty that has governed their lives, and find themselves on an adventure they never could have imagined.

PERFECT FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY! This reading of LEFTOVERS is the perfect show for teenage audiences to dive deeper into their love of theater! We have even put together a study guide for our young theater-goers to imagine their own version of the production! Check out our study guide here

VEAL

October 21 & 22

By Jojo Jones
Directed By Joy Dolo

Following a violent coup, a young woman named Chelsea becomes Queen of North America. When 3 friends from her past come asking for a big favor, Chelsea makes them revisit their friendship—and its terrible end.

Veal is a deceptive little monster of a post-apocalyptic play that explores the intersocial dynamics of middle school girls and the long-lasting ramifications of those relationships.”

TULIPA

April 28 & 29

By Kate Douglas

There was a brief moment in the 17th century when a plant could ruin your life. The tulip nearly toppled its economy and turned a stable society on its head. The flower became a luxury item with many individuals paying more for “broken” bulbs (a viral infection that “broke” the petal colors into two or more).

With this riveting time set as the backdrop, TULIPA is a sensual and surprising monologue telling the riches to rags story about a widow in Holland who loses everything in the name of tulips.
