Looking back at our first-ever SHINE A LIGHT festival

From our Interim Artistic Director

We miss you. We miss the collaborative process of bringing a play from page to stage. We miss the revelations in the rehearsal room. We miss the discoveries with an audience.

“Shine A Light” is a love letter to the people behind that process. The people who adapt, innovate, and create. We are grateful to the innovators and creators who assembled to make our inaugural and interactive “Shine A Light” festival a success. Here’s to adventurous art.

— Christina Baldwin
Interim Artistic Director

Thank you to all who joined us for the Jungle’s first-ever SHINE A LIGHT festival. Recognizing that we could not share art in the same way that we have previously, this free community event pushed our creativity to the outdoors, transforming our venue’s architecture into a canvas.

This multimedia event featured ten talented local artists, many of whom were scheduled to be part of our 2019-2020 Season: Sarah Bahr (REDWOOD), Chelsea Warren (MARY JANE), Mina Kinukawa (CAMBODIAN ROCK BAND), Michael Murnane, Karin Olson (REDWOOD), H. Adam Harris (REDWOOD), Isabella Star LaBlanc (MARY JANE), and Eric Sharp (CAMBODIAN ROCK BAND) as well as a special collaboration with Bayou and E.G. Bailey from Catalyst Arts.

Photo collection of the window installations

These incredible window installations were complemented by virtual content that included audio overlay, behind the scenes photos, interviews, video, and audio commentary.

Exploring the many ways collaborations occur and listening to the vital voices of our artists, the Jungle's SHINE A LIGHT event is paired the window installation designers with area artists to create thoughtful responses to the installations. These audio commentaries added depth for the viewer's experience to help spark expansive conversation. Visit our last blog entry to experience these commentaries.

In addition to the window displays and online content, SHINE A LIGHT kicked off with almost 200 individuals gathering throughout our opening weekend for stunning projections that lit up the north side of our building.

Karin Olson & Michael Murnane’s Hold, Please observed the opportunity for thoughtfulness created by the postponement of all live performance events in response to Coronavirus; and was truly a meditation on the emptiness of the theater and its usual behind-the-scenes collaborators.

SHINE A LIGHT was created to lift up the people who make theater, providing a platform to explore themes that impact them and their work. We are extremely thankful for all of our artists who helped make this dream a reality. To all of our designers, commentary artists, craftspeople, donors, highlighted community organizations and our event sponsor Marvin, thank you.
